Is a diode laser engraver a good first machine?
For wood, leather, card, slate and coated metal it is the sensible first machine, and the specification to weigh ahead of wattage is whether it is enclosed. An open-frame diode emits visible laser light at roughly the height of your face and puts smoke straight into the room, so buying open-frame also means buying eye protection rated for the wavelength and a way to vent fumes outdoors. Priced honestly, an open machine plus those two purchases lands close to an enclosed one.
What does optical wattage mean, and why does it matter here?
Optical wattage is the light that actually reaches the material, and electrical wattage is what the module draws from the supply. The second number is much larger for the same cutting ability, and diode listings are where the two get used interchangeably. It matters because it is the only figure that compares one diode machine to another. Where a maker states which quantity it means, Laser Oracle records it with the document it came from; where nobody states it, we say the figure is undefined rather than guess.
What can a diode laser not do?
Bare metal and clear acrylic, and both are absolute rather than a matter of degree. Bare steel, aluminium and brass reflect the 450nm light a diode emits, so no wattage and no number of passes leaves a permanent mark, though coated metal marks fine. Clear acrylic is transparent to the same light, so the beam passes through and does nothing at all. Neither limit is a quality problem with cheap machines; both apply to the most expensive diode made.
Can a diode laser cut through wood?
Thin wood, slowly, over several passes. A diode is an engraver that can cut rather than a cutter, which is a real distinction once you are making the same item repeatedly and the machine is the slow step. For occasional cutting of thin ply it is genuinely fine. For production cutting the honest answer is a CO2 tube, and the CO2 guide on this site lists what is buyable.
