Do I need a CO2 laser to cut wood, or will a diode do it?
A diode cuts thin wood slowly and a CO2 cuts thicker wood in one pass, and the honest dividing line is what you plan to make. Coasters, signage engraving, plaques and anything where the laser darkens a surface are diode work and the results are good. Cutting shapes out of quarter-inch plywood repeatedly is CO2 work, because a diode doing the same job runs several passes, scorches the edges more, and takes long enough that the machine becomes the bottleneck in whatever you are selling.
Which woods engrave well, and which should I avoid?
Light, close-grained hardwoods give the cleanest contrast, and the reason is that the laser is burning the surface rather than adding anything. Basswood, maple, cherry and birch ply all darken evenly. Pine and other resinous softwoods have hard and soft bands that absorb differently, so the same setting produces a patchy result across one board. The material to genuinely avoid is anything containing chlorine, which means PVC and some treated timber: it releases chlorine gas that damages the machine and the person operating it.
Will these machines do leather and acrylic as well as wood?
Leather yes on both source types, and clear acrylic on CO2 only. Leather engraves and cuts on a diode and a CO2 machine alike, because it absorbs both wavelengths. Clear acrylic is the exception people meet late: it is transparent to the light a diode emits, so a diode passes straight through it and does nothing, while a CO2 tube cuts it cleanly and leaves the polished edge acrylic is bought for. Tinted and cast acrylic behave differently again, and the listings rarely say which they mean.
What does the wattage on a wood laser actually tell me?
Less than the number suggests, because two different quantities are printed in the same place. Some makers quote optical output, the light that reaches the material, and others quote the electrical draw of the module, which is a much larger number for the same cutting ability. A CO2 tube figure and a diode module figure are not comparable at all, since the wavelengths are absorbed by wood in different proportions. Where a maker defines its own term we record which one it is, and where nobody does we say so.
Do I need extraction to cut wood indoors?
Yes, and it is the line people leave out of the budget. Cutting wood produces visible smoke and fine particulate continuously, and it has to leave the room rather than be spread around it. An inline fan ducted through a window moves more air than a filter unit and has no consumable to replace. Filtration exists for rooms with no exterior wall, and it is a running cost rather than a one-off. The starter setup guide on this site sums a working bench including that line.
