What can a UV laser mark that a fiber laser cannot?
Clear and light-coloured plastics, glass, and anything where heat ruins the part. A fiber source marks plastics by melting them, which works on some and produces a rough or discoloured result on others, and it largely passes through clear glass. A UV source marks by breaking bonds at the surface, so it produces fine, high-contrast marks on polymers, glass, ceramics and coated stock without the surrounding material heating up. Medical, electronic and cosmetic parts are the usual reason someone buys one.
Is a UV laser better than a fiber laser for metal?
No, and this is the misunderstanding worth clearing up before spending the money. Fiber is the right general answer for metal: it is faster, cheaper and absorbed well by every common metal. UV marks metal too, and more finely, but you are paying a large premium for precision on a job fiber already does. UV earns its price when the same shop also has to mark plastics or glass that fiber handles badly.
Why do UV lasers cost more than fiber lasers of the same wattage?
Because the wattage figures are not comparable and the source is harder to build. A UV source is produced by converting the frequency of an infrared source, and that conversion is lossy, so a few watts of UV represents a much larger machine than a few watts of fiber. Comparing the two on wattage alone reads as though a UV marker is poor value; comparing them on what they can mark is the comparison that means something.
