Fume extraction
Burning leather smells like burning leather, and the smoke carries whatever the hide was tanned with. This is the one material on this site where the extraction is a health line rather than a housekeeping one, and it belongs in the budget beside the machine.

Beds and tooling
Hide is not flat and does not stay flat. A honeycomb bed holds it down and lets the beam and the smoke out of the back of the cut, instead of reflecting off a solid base into the underside of a panel you have already paid for.

Optics and safety
Eyewear has to match the wavelength the machine emits, and the two are not interchangeable. A CO2 tube emits at 10,600nm and a diode at 450nm, and a pair rated for one is not rated for the other.
