Catalogue read

The federal marking rule sets a minimum depth of .003 inch and a minimum print size of 1/16 inch. That single figure disqualifies most of this catalogue before price enters the conversation: a diode engraver does not cut .003 inch into a steel or aluminium receiver at any wattage, and neither does a CO2 tube. A fiber or UV marker does. Everything else on this page is a detail by comparison.

Every figure behind this guide, sourced and datedThe full finding: counts, ordering, and the spec nobody prints

Laser Oracle tracks 14 laser machines in stock on Amazon today, with prices from the Amazon Product Advertising API refreshed every three hours, starting at $1,599. The list is ordered by Amazon's own category placement rather than by our preference; the best-placed machine currently sits at #89 in Engraving Machines & Tools. 13 of them carry a full sourced review here, with the workspace requirement, license cost and software compatibility read from each manufacturer's own pages. The gap a buyer should know about: of the reviewed machines in this bracket, none publishes an optical output figure, as distinct from the wattage on the box. Laser Oracle does not test machines: every figure on this page is a live listing value or a quotation from a manufacturer document, dated when it was read.

What marks firearms, and what does not

The source decides this, not the wattage. Quoted from each maker’s own documentation, with the date it was read.

Which laser source marks firearms, by wavelength, with the condition on each
MaterialFiber1064nmCO210.6µmDiode450nmUV355nmWhat decides it
Stainless steel Marks it No No Marks itEight machines publish a cut depth for stainless, xTool at 2mm on MOPA fiber. A MOPA source additionally colour-marks it by tuning pulse duration, which a plain fiber source cannot do, and neither a diode nor a CO2 tube marks it bare at all.
Bare stainless, brass, titanium Marks it No No Marks itBare metal reflects the 450nm light a diode emits and absorbs the 1064nm a fiber source emits. This is the one line in the table that no wattage and no number of passes changes.
Anodised aluminium Marks it Conditional Conditional Marks itThe anodised layer is a coating, so a diode and a CO2 tube remove it and expose the metal underneath. That is a real and permanent mark, and it is a different result from marking the aluminium itself, which needs a fiber or UV source.
Anodised, powder-coated or painted metal Marks it Conditional Conditional Marks itA diode and a CO2 tube remove the coating rather than marking the metal, so the mark is the substrate showing through. That is a real result and it is why listings can honestly say "metal" and mean something narrower than raw stainless.

What each maker publishes about firearms

No maker publishes a figure for firearms as such, because it is a use rather than a material. 9 of the 14 machines in stock below publish a claim for steel, stainless or aluminium, which is what a receiver is made of, which is what one is made of. This is what each states, quoted, with the date it was read.

What else firearms needs

Not extras. These are the parts of the job the machine does not come with, and the lines people leave out when they compare two prices.

Marking sprays

A marking spray bonds a coating to the surface rather than cutting into it. Useful on parts you are decorating, and it is not what the depth requirement above is asking for.

Optics and safety

Eyewear has to match the wavelength the machine emits. A fiber source at 1064nm needs its own, and a pair rated for a CO2 tube gives no protection against it.

How this list was builtThe screen, the ordering, and what we do not do

The screen is mechanical: every machine we track on Amazon that is in stock, carries a live price, and is not a duplicate listing. The order is Amazon’s own category placement, read from the Product Advertising API and refreshed every three hours. Laser Oracle does not test machines and has no preference to encode; where a unit has a full review here, the review quotes the manufacturer’s own documents with the date each was read. Guide copy last reviewed 2026-08-20.

What is the best laser engraver for firearms?
A fiber marker, and the reason is a regulation rather than a preference. The federal marking rule requires the serial number and associated information to be engraved, cast or stamped to a minimum depth of .003 inch, in a print size no smaller than 1/16 inch. A diode engraver does not cut .003 inch into a steel or aluminium receiver at any wattage, and a CO2 tube does not mark bare metal at all. That leaves the fiber and UV tier, and within it the choice is about bed size and how much you are marking rather than about capability.
How deep does an ATF-compliant engraving have to be?
A minimum depth of .003 inch, with the serial number and any associated license number in a print size no smaller than 1/16 inch. That is quoted from the regulation itself, 27 CFR 478.92(a)(1)(v), and the citation is on this page with the date it was read. Anyone quoting a different figure is either citing an older revision or guessing. Depth is the part machines fail on; character height is a settings question.
Will a diode laser meet the depth requirement?
No, and this is the single most useful thing on this page. A diode emits at 450nm, which bare steel and bare aluminium reflect rather than absorb, so it does not mark the metal at all before depth even becomes the question. On an anodised or coated receiver it removes the coating, which is a permanent, visible mark and is still not .003 inch into the metal. Buying a diode for compliance marking is the expensive mistake this category is full of.
What does Laser Oracle actually publish about this?
The specification layer and nothing beyond it. We record what each maker states its machine marks, quoted from their own documentation with the date it was read, and we quote the marking regulation with its section reference. We are not a legal advisor, we do not sell firearms or any part of one, and every product linked from this page is a laser marker or a consumable for one. If your build has a question this page does not answer, that question is for a licensed dealer or the agency, not for a specification site.
How is this list ordered, and have you tested these?
By Amazon’s own category placement, refreshed through the day, and no, we have not run these machines and do not claim to. What Laser Oracle adds is the layer the listings leave out: the source type, the published working area, whether a wattage claim is optical or electrical, and what the maker does not state at all. Every price here came from Amazon within the last three hours.
