What is a MOPA laser?
MOPA stands for Master Oscillator Power Amplifier, and the name describes how the laser is built. A low-power seed laser, the master oscillator, generates the pulse; a separate fiber amplifier stage then boosts it. Because generating the pulse and amplifying it happen in two stages rather than one, the pulse duration and the repetition rate can be set independently. A Q-switched fiber laser generates and amplifies in a single cavity, so its pulse duration is a property of that cavity and is effectively fixed. In published specifications the difference shows up as a range instead of a value: ComMarker states 2 to 500 ns for the B6 60W and Monport states 2 to 500 ns for the GM60 Mopa Pro, while Monport states a fixed 80 to 120 ns for its Q-switched GM30 Pro.
MOPA vs fiber laser: what is the actual difference?
A MOPA is a fiber laser, so the comparison people mean is MOPA against Q-switched, which is the other way a fiber source is built. The difference is one specification: whether you can set the pulse duration. Everything else follows from it. Colour marking on stainless, annealing without cutting into the surface, and marking thin anodised aluminium all depend on controlling how much heat lands and for how long. A Q-switched machine at twice the wattage still cannot do them.
Can a Q-switched fiber laser do colour marking?
Not according to the manufacturers. Monport publishes colour engraving support and lists stainless steel including colour marking for the GM60 Mopa Pro, which it specifies with an adjustable 2 to 500 ns pulse width and a 1 to 4000 kHz frequency range. For its Q-switched GM30 Pro, on the same specification table, Monport states a fixed 80 to 120 ns pulse and makes no colour claim at all. That is one manufacturer drawing the line between its own two machines, which is stronger evidence than any third party explaining the physics. Which MOPA machines publish their pulse width?
